I think, I am not sure that you need a mixture of both, also it is important that you go through cycles of deep and REM sleep, I think it is best to wake whilst in REM sleep

I thought that the majority of dreaming takes place in the REM cycle. With each person normally having a number of REM cycles each night during sleep. These cycles are important as it is when the body can rest, repair and recover.

I think there are 4 stages of sleep and we go through them few times during the night….3 stages are nonREM and only one is REM and during this period we dream and paradoxically even if there is more brain activity in this stage it is more difficult to be waken up….apparently people who have few Remaining stages have more problems with long term memories…

When we have a REM cycle we do always dream but we don’t always remember it. WE need a combination of the two to get fully rested as well.
