We lose our voice when we get inflammation of our vocal chords. When this happens they can’t vibrate as well so the sounds do not form in the same way or at all when you have an infection in your throat.

Katie’s right as well as the inflammation mucus will clog up the vocal cords meaning instead of vibrating the make little noise. Imagine trying to play a guitar and the strings are covered in Vaseline!

The vocal chords are key to providing the noises required for speech. So when we loose our voices, it is normally due to something effecting the vocal chords so that they cannot vibrate to make the sounds. I would guess that you have some kind of swelling, inflammation that effects how the vocal chords vibrate.
