Duane is right. It tends to be a build up of tension in surrounding muscle fibres placing a lot of pressure on the nerve. In some cases the nerve fibre itself can become tight and tense and cause pain. It is important to try and keep the body andmuscles loose and flexible to prevent this from happening, however if a mscule becoems injured its natural response is to tighten up to protect itself and this can lead to nerves getting trapped too. So muscle tightening affecting the nerves can happen as a result of injury or happen over time and slowly get worse.
