I think this is an ongoing research, it is still debatable and I am not quite sure which one that the scientists recommend. What makes me slightly worried is when someone with heart condition who hardly exercises suddenly performs a vigorous exercise. This is certainly not recommended as there is a risk of cardiac arrest, which may result in death.

But obviously it eventually come down to what people prefer and what they think suit them best.

Its better to do a little each day or a few days a week than one lassive lot every now and again. Depending on how long the gap is between each time you exercise the benefits may have subsided before you do it again if its a long time. As Theresia mentions, those who do not do much acativity and may have health conditions need to ease into exercise and let their body adjust.
