So at the molecular level, we know that muscle is made up of lots and lots of different proteins. For example, some like Myosin and Actin help the muscle contract, some mitochondrial proteins allow the muscle to use more fuels to provide energy and others help the muscle to get bigger and stronger. Since the human genome was sequenced, we are learning more and more about the genes that regulate skeletal muscle and how muscle responds to exercise and nutrition, or in chronic disease states.
