Muscle has a lot of very important things to do in the body. The first thing is to support our bodies structure, so along with the skeleton, muscle maintains posture. Without it you’d just fall over 🙂 Then muscle allows us to move by lengthening and shortening to move our limbs and provide movement. Muscle is also a store for a lot of fuels. So carbohydrate gets stored as glycogen which is a really important source of energy, whilst fats get stored as intermuscular triglycerides and then are also used as a fuel. The final thing that muscle does is remove glucose from the bloodstream. So reduced muscle function has been closely linked with the progression of diabetes as muscle loses its ability to use glucose from the bloodstream….
The guys have got this covered for you here. Muscles are great things and we need to look after them well, exercie them and also importantly let them recover when they are tired!
