Sleep is a time to recover and repair, it is also now known to be important for preventing obesity and type 2 diabetes. We have evolved to be awake during the day, and our bodies make hormones (melatonin and cortisol) which help to tell us when to sleep and be awake. So, if we miss sleep or wake up at the wrong time we can feel tired.
