There is something called the hedonic mix, when you combine fat and sugar in food and that makes it really desirable. This is not just humans it, mice like this type of food too. It is probably a nature desire to consume high energy food as historically food was scarce
It does seem that the food that we think tastes the nicest seems to have the most calories in it doesn’t it! Certain types of food activate different parts of the brain that trigger different sensations. Our brain certainly responds to sugars and this response is likely to have evolved. The only difference is before sugar was scarce and we would have to go looking for it to get that nice feeling/reward/brain activation. Whereas now we can get a quick fix anytime cause of all the sugar rich foods that are available.
Some foods that we tend to think of as healthier options are not always healthy. Foods that are reduced in fat tend to have more sugar in them to make them taste nicer. Its this that we are tempted by and the rush the sugar gives us! Too much sugar can be bad for us but a little of the gorgeous food now and again as a treat wont hurt 🙂
I am with Katie on this one…we can have some unhealthy food now and then….after all we need some fat in our diet to keep the membrane of cells in the body intact and some sugar too to keep us going in the day!!
